"Self-development" books often follow a predictable format. When we think of a self-development book, we imagine advice like "You can do it," "Don't fear anything," and "Stop worrying and start living."

While some people (not me) find this type of book useful, the book I'm about to discuss is quite different, even though it falls under the same category.

**Broke with Benefits** by Mo Yusuf won't tell you that you can do everything with determination and willpower, nor will it claim you can overcome all difficulties. Quite the opposite: it acknowledges that some things must be accepted as they are, even if you don't like them.

This small booklet can fit in your pocket if you buy it in print, or on your phone if you purchase it digitally. It's perfect for reading one or more pages while waiting for transportation or at the train station. Each page offers a complete story, sharing experiences that shaped Mo's life and how he dealt with them.

This book won't teach you how to get rich, but it will highlight other impactful ways to make a difference in the world, even if you are broke.

Some stories and incidents in the book may move you to tears, but Mo's comedic style shines through, providing unexpected humor in unexpected places.

"When you're broke you have the luxury of changing your vocation and trying other things without any negative repercussions. Most people wish they could live like that. YAY, ME!!"

Unique Aspects:

Broader View: Unlike many self-help books focused solely on financial strategies, this book integrates self-development, mental health, and community engagement.

Realism and Applicability: The author shares personal anecdotes and real-life examples, making the advice practical and relevant.

Creativity and Innovation: The book encourages making the most of what you already have, fostering a creative and innovative mindset.

Humor and Fun: Mo's comedic take on serious topics adds a refreshing twist, making the tips both practical and entertaining.

Currently, the book is only available in English, but I hope it will soon be translated into Arabic.

Who is Mo Youssef?

Mohamed (Mo) Yusuf is a Somali comedian, screenwriter, and broadcaster. Born in Kuwait, holding a Djiboutian passport, having spent most of his life in the UAE, anf also studied in the United States. His diverse cultural experiences shape his unique comedic style.

I first encountered Mo through the "Maqoola" program, which he produced for the i2 TV in 2006. If You don't remember this channel, you are excused as it was affiliated with the Emirati mobile phone seller company back then “Etisalat” and only lasted for one year. The "Maqoola" program was a comedy  variety show featuring funny news about mobile phones. I followed the show religiously.

After the channel closed in 2007, and with YouTube not yet widespread, no significant archive remained. "5G," the presenter of "Maqoola," left a lasting impression on me, influencing my writing and video scripts. The search for 5G continued for 15 years. Spoiler alert: I found him and pushed him to upload an episode from his archive on Youtube.

Mo Youssef has also contributed to a range of well-known advertisements, films, and series. Notably, he worked on the “KarimoPhobia” series, which is currently available on the Shahid platform. This series delves into mental health issues in the lives of celebrities and influencers. He also contributed to the acclaimed Emirati film “Rashid and Rajab,” among other significant works.

Still searching for “5G” 15 years later.

In 2021, I decided to search on LinkedIn, hoping to find someone who had worked for i2 TV and could tell me the real name of the "Maqoola" presenter. After connecting with everyone who mentioned i2 TV in their professional records and directly asking about the presenter, someone kindly informed me that he was known as "Phat Mo." I continued searching and eventually found his YouTube channel and an email address through IMDB. I wrote to him and confirmed it was indeed the original 5G.

After this bollywood-like journey, I coordinated with Mo Youssef and recorded a podcast episode that will be released soon. It includes more details about the story, information, and advice about the world of art, film, production, and writing, all filled with comedy and humorous anecdotes.

Mo generously gave me a copy of his book **Broke with Benefits**. After reading it, I wrote this review with my honest opinion. The book is indeed worth owning and can be obtained through the following link.
